Freezer Time

Posted on March 23, 2015 by Mary Patterson

Do you avoid those deep dark corners of the freezer like I do... knowing there were times where I had good intentions and froze some left overs, but forgetting how long they have been in the freezer and knowing at this point they are long forgotten with no desire to be eaten anymore?

Well, hopefully this is following your Refrigerator Cleanse and you feel so awesome, you are ready to tackle that freezer! We are going to keep it super simple. Take a deep breathe because you may be purging a little more than you wish. Remind yourself this is for a long term solution of good health! Let's get right to it!

Unload the Freezer!

Toss anything Expired OR those good intention leftovers that have not been touched. Be honest with those leftovers and only keep what you 100% know will be eaten!

Remove shelves/draws and scrub and dry with our favorite Basic H cleaner!

Replace the shelves and get ready for a clean slate!

Categorize food as you put back in:

Let's start healthy items and by healthy items, I want you to think simple:

  • Vegetables
  • Fruit
  • Fish (un - marinated/seasoned)
  • Meat (un - marinated/seasoned)

What might be left?
Home-made marinades / prepped crockpots meals etc. Yes! Find an easy to access visual place for these.
Store bought pre-made meals/items: Hold on, time to read the label:
Re-Visit our Refrigerator Cleanse Ingredients Here: all the same rules apply
Time to add to this list:

  • Bromated Vegetable Oil, aka “BVO.”BVO has been linked to increasing cholesterol levels and can cause damage to vital organs including the liver and kidneys.
  • Benzoate Preservatives, aka “BHT, BHA, TBHQ.”-These chemicals are used to help keep fats in foods from going rancid.  They’ve been linked with serious concerns like increasing cancer risk, disrupting estrogen balance, asthma and hyperactivity.
  • AzodicarbonamideA bleaching agent used in packaged, processed foods like frozen dinners, pasta and flour mixes in baked goods. This toxic chemical has been linked to cancer risk and asthma.

Go back and re-visit your refrigerator if you think any of these ingredients may be lurking in there. Odds are pretty strong you  got rid of most of them with the first purge, but sometimes these guys sneak there way into beverages, marinades, bread, etc.

Did we go too far!?
Are you cringing at trashing too much food or know someone in your house is not going to be happy with their missing favorites? Place all the items that contain these ingredients on one shelf. Only allow yourself one shelf. When you finish that food or meal, look for a healthier replacement. Not sure what a better option would be - ask us!

Not ready to get rid of it all?
Pick 1 or 2 things that you will allow yourself to keep. Keep it real for you and your family. We all need a little balance and that balance is different for everyone depending what stage of the healthy journey you are in.

You have now completed the refrigerator and freezer! Nice work! Again, live with this cleanse for a couple of days. Learn what food items your family needs a healthier replacement for and what habits you need to learn to keep the healthy cleanse in place.

In a couple of days, we will take a pretty big step forward and attack that food pantry!
