40 minutes for 40 days

Posted on February 18, 2015 by Mary Patterson

As we celebrated Fat Tuesday last night with friends, I was asked what I was giving up for lent. I will be honest that the season kind of snuck up on me and I wasn't prepared with an answer so I had to spend some time thinking about it. I knew it wasn't going to be food related. I have learned repeatedly year after year that giving up a certain food or food category doesn't work with me. Who knows, maybe it is an instinct to rebel or maybe it is the sugar addict in me that just wants more if someone says no. I began to think about behavioral changes I can do to improve myself, improve business, improve family lifestyle. This is what I came up with...

Every day for the next 40 days:

Limit myself to 10 minutes per day on social media
I will admit I am a social media junky and this is going to be hard. I use the excuse of using social media for business purposes but there are so many times I find myself mindlessly scrolling the news feeds. A 2 minute bathroom break becomes 10 minutes (Come on you know you all do it.) Add on a couple of minutes starting and parking the car. 2 minutes of silence when in the car with the family becomes too long and I shoot for distraction (Talk about setting a bad example for the kids.) So for the next 40 days, if I am a little quiet and less interactive, please forgive me. I will do my best!

Read for 10 minutes (books, articles)
Can be for pleasure or educational, but not gossip. I am usually pretty good and only read smut and gossip magazines with a quick cover scan at the grocery store check out line or every 6 weeks when I get my hair done. The rest of the gossip is all social media which is taken care of with my limit to 10 minutes per day. I am starting to sweat just thinking about it and working hard on keeping the Facebook tab closed! I will pick up a good book to read that is non fitness and nutrition related and I have a collection of IDEA Journals, business books, and health books that need my loving or could use some revisiting.

10 minutes of Texting or Calling
This idea has come about with a series of events the past couple of months. Reconnecting with old friends and missing friends and family that live afar. It feels so good to get a random hello through text or on the phone from someone who means so much in your life that you don't get to see so often. Also, on the business front, I have realized and have learned that people are not really reading emails anymore or answering their phones. Easiest and quickest way to connect is shooting a quick text! I am hoping this will help with reconnecting and maintaining relationships and also building strong customer service and business overall!

10 minutes of Yoga
My love for yoga has been renewed with the addition of Gaia Fit Yoga (in partnership with 843 Benefits and Health Marketplace for their wellness programming). At the same time, I have witnessed the love and focus my youngest son has with yoga. I have become a pretty self confident person in my workouts, but I realize the yoga mat brings out a little bit of negativity and ickiness inside. Fortunately by the end of the workout, it is refreshed and renewed. I need to connect and work through this. Left unsaid is also the amazing benefit it has on my calves and hips that need a lot more loving.

In the end, I am hoping these 40 minutes each day will give me more self discipline, more time and more productivity for family life and business life. This is a new experiment so time (or 40 days) shall tell!

What do you think? What did you decide to do this year?
