When You Add Nutrition to Your Fitness

I started boot camp over a year and a half ago. It was recommended to me by a friend when I felt like I needed help with exercising. At that time I was going to the gym very infrequently. I was nervous about doing boot camp because I was not in good shape and I had heard stories about other boot camp classes. When I started it was hard, but not impossible and Mary did not yell, but was very encouraging and always gave options for modifications if you felt that an exercise was too hard. She always watched and pushed some people, while understanding who needed to go easier.

The people at the class were always nice and welcoming, but my favorite part was that everyone was at a different level so you never felt out of place. We also made the class fun whenever we had a chance! After doing boot camp for a year I was getting stronger and more able to do the exercises, but I was not losing weight. I realized that I was using boot camp as an excuse to eat more. I would justify having one more cookie or piece of pizza because I was exercising.

When Mary offered a food challenge I was hesitant at first. I love food and have a serious sweet tooth, but I knew something had to change. I did her first challenge, which introduced protein shakes and had us eliminate food to see what our body liked and did not like. Then I did a lean and healthy challenge, where we had to keep a food journal, take weights and get measured. This is where we really learned how to balance the different types of food with the right portions. This is when my eyes opened about how bad I was eating. Mary was a great support during this time with daily messages and weekly meetings to review our journals.

While it was tough to change the way I was eating it was encouraging because I started to see my body change.

Now when I go shopping for food I hear Mary, in my head, reminding me what to eat! This has been a long journey for me and I could not have done it without Mary and my Gaia Fit Family. The support that I feel from her and the people in the class has been amazing. I have learned so much from each one of them.

I also have to thank my family. My husband and girls have been so supportive and encouraging as well. They have changed the way they eat with me so that we are all on a healthy pathway.
