Last Thanksgiving, Gaia Fit New Jersey offered it's first Thanksgiving Day Charity Boot Camp to benefit Superstorm Sandy victims. It was a very natural thing to do since we were all looking for ways to help those who were affected by a devastating storm that hit so close to home. It was a huge success. So this year, as I began to think about our November schedule, it was an easy decision to make the charity boot camp an annual event. Since this is the time of year that temperatures really start to drop, we decided to offer this year's charity boot camp to benefit One Warm Coat, a national organization that distributes gently used coats all over the United States to those in need. As if the boot camp wasn't special enough, one of our boot campers, Veronica Scanlon, owner of Yoga by V, donated her time for the cause and led us through 20 minutes of yoga following our boot camp workout.
I'm hoping that those who participated this year and last would agree that there is just no better way to start a day of giving thanks for all that we have than to give to those who don't have as much as we do. It's easy to forget that this is what Thanksgiving is all about especially if you host your family like I did this year and spend days food shopping, cleaning, baking, and cooking for your Thanksgiving dinner. I'd like to think that this one hour of boot camp helps us to take pause and feel the true essence of the day. There is no better gesture of gratitude then to acknowledge how fortunate you are by helping those who are in need. The 18 boot campers who attended this year did just that and generously donated over 30 coats to help people less fortunate stay warm this cold winter season.
This generosity gives me just one more thing to be thankful for this holiday season - a Gaia Fit family full of compassion, generousity, and inspiration.
